At Home with Diversity

The industry is changing, which means you must change with it.

The At Home with Diversity (AHWD) educational experience is designed to present a picture of the changing face of the industry. REALTORS® who adapt to increasing cultural diversity and wisely plan to meet the needs of diverse clients gain a competitive edge and expand opportunities.

The AWHD gives you the ability to:

  • Assess and understand attributes of diversity in local markets and associated impacts on the real estate industry.
  • Build a business plan and selling strategy to successfully service all client profiles.
  • Understand basic competencies to earn the confidence of potential buyers and sellers, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, gender, handicaps, familial status or national origin.

You'll learn about these topics and more in this course:

  • Embracing diversity: Discuss the importance of defining diversity in business and how researching demographic information can assist with better understanding cultural and communication dynamics among diverse consumers.
  • Fair housing and diversity: Discuss the "One America" principles and fair housing concepts, including steering, predatory lending and the REALTOR® Fair Housing Declaration.
  • "One America" principlesSummarize other strategies you can use to ensure your real estate practice is inclusive.
  • Combating bias to create a thriving businessDistinguish between cultural and personal biases and how each can adversely shape our perceptions and behaviors when dealing with clients.
  • Inclusive multicultural marketingExplain the importance of networking and performing meaningful multicultural outreach in your community.
  • Creating your inclusive business plan: Formulate an inclusive business plan that embraces diversity and grows your business.

Course takeaways
 You'll walk away with the ability to:

  • Heighten awareness of and develop sensitivity to the social and cultural constituencies of local real estate markets. 
  • Learn about the people who make up the local market, along with their values, customs, real estate needs and expectations of real estate professionals.

Course details

  • Date and time: July 26-27, 2023 | 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. each day. Attendance is required for both sessions to receive AHWD course credit.
  • Location: Virtual course via Zoom. Students are required to be on camera for the entire course. 
  • Instructor: Amy Peterson
  • Credits: This course qualifies for six hours of GRI elective course credit. Provides ABR elective course credit when working toward the ABR designation. Does not qualify for CE credit.
